This is an early 1st Model 1894 Rifle in caliber 38-55. Standard 26" octagon barrel, full magazine, and crescent rifle buttplate. These are RARE RARE RARE!!!!! There were only a couple thousand 1st Models built and are the closest variant to John Browning's original patent model which he patented on August 21, 1894. So what makes it a first model? Note external guide rail screws on each side of the frame (next to loading port at 10 o'clock on right side).
The very first 1894's were in caliber 38-55 and began leaving the factory in late October, 1894. The 2nd model, which incorporates internally mounted guide rail screws, appeared early in production...usually seen in 32-40 caliber...but eventually in 38-55 as well.. Personally, I've owned 2nd models with 3-digit serial numbers... but these 2nd's didn't begin to dominate the 1st Model in any significant quantity until around the 2-3,000 serial range. Over the years, we've seen a a number of 1st Models in the 3,000 ranges...and even a few in the 4,000 range. This rifle is rather special in that respect. This First model is in the low 5,000 serial range and was probably among the last built amid a sea of 2nd Models coming out of the factory. To date, this is the highest numbered 1st Model that I've personally seen in my days of collecting Winchesters. It's probable that there are even higher numbered examples out there but our guess would be no more than just a handful.

Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Fine. It's a nice untouched example that's all original and appears to have been used but well-cared for. The receiver has 70% original blue showing that is thinning with balance turned to a pleasing patina. The barrel and magazine have mostly turned brown but there is 30-40% original dull original blue mixed in. Hammer has 65% original case colors with 20% faded colors on lever/balance turned to silver. The screws are near Excellent overall. Nice markings including the early 3-lines on the upper tang with manufacture, model, and original patent date. Barrel has the 2-line Winchester address located on the top flat. "38-55" is marked on top just ahead of the receiver. Original sights include standard semi-buckhorn rear and German silver blade front. The wood is impressive on this old 1894. It's completely untouched with just the right combination of wear, age, and condition. Stock and forearm are still a pleasing red/orange color (a bit lighter than what you see in the photos) with most of the original varnish intact. Yet, there is wear and use in the form of small scratches, nicks, etc..that add character to the gun. Wood-to-metal fit is perfect. Never sanded. Mechanics are in Good order with a Very Good Bore. A very solid example of a scarce early Model 1894 Winchester rifle.
