This is an early Antique Model 1892 Winchester Sporting Rifle with a scarce first year production serial number in the 22,000 range. Caliber 44-40 aka 44 Winchester Center Fire. Standard 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, and crescent rifle buttplate. Overall Condition is NRA Antique Excellent with 85-90% original receiver blue with some freckling and correct factory forging striations/streaks showing through the blue. 98% bolt blue. Barrel and magazine tube blue have 95% original blue. Hammer, lever, and even the buttplate still retain significant amounts of their original case colors. Nearly all the fire blue remains on the loading port and on most showing on the extractor. This rifle has all the great markings and knurlings you can wish for on a Model 1892 starting with the 2 line barrel address, the three line markings on the upper tang with John Browning's 1884 Patent date, and the early pattern hammer checkering with decorative widow's peak border. Fantastic walnut stocks still retain 95% original varnish with perfect wood to metal fit....no chips, cracks, or repairs. Excellent mechanics and Fine+ bore. Standard 1892 sporting rifles in .44-40 with octagon barrels have become highly sought after by Winchester collectors. With only 16% of production being antique, finding one that has survived in Excellent condition has proved rather difficult. This is one of the best examples of this configuration with a low serial number we've offered in several years.
