This is a very early production Model 1892 sporting rifle in Caliber 44-40. Antique serial number in the low 2,000 range dates it to first year production. Standard 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, and crescent rifle buttplate with early markings and knurlings. Hammer has the early style checkering with decorative dipped border...usually only found on 92's produced prior to 1895. 1st style barrel address clearly reads, "MANUFACTURED BY THE-/ -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-". Top of barrel in front of receiver has the caliber mark "44 W.C.F." which stands for .44 Caliber Winchester Center Fire. aka 44-40. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1892/ -WINCHESTER- / PAT. OCT. 14. 1884."
NRA Antique Very Good Condition overall with smooth metal and good edges that has turned to a light patina overall. Traces of original blue in protected areas. Excellent markings throughout. Very Good+ screws overall. Sights include the standard front sight with German silver blade and Winchester semi-buckhorn rear sight w/early style elevator. Very Good wood with nice wood to metal fit that is tight and has never been sanded or cleaned. Very good bore with nice rifling and only a few minor pits. This one has it all! A very desirable configuration for a Model 1892 in the most collectible caliber with an antique first year production serial number!
