Winchester Early 1st Model Hotchkiss Carbine w/ 3-Digit SN#

This is a very early example of the First Model 1879 Winchester Hotchkiss Saddle Ring Carbine. Caliber is .45-70 with 24" barrel and military sights. This is one of the more challenging saddle ring carbines for the Winchester collector to locate, as many have cracked wood. It's been several years since we've managed to find a Model 1879 without that pesky crack in the stock that so many Model 1879's have. This one is as solid as they come! Serial number on the left side of the receiver is in the 800 range, making this first year production. Tubular magazine inside the stock holds five rounds of .45-70 with selector switch on right side beneath bolt that allowed the user to selectively fire the weapon as a single shot or as a repeater. Manufacturer information along with various patent dates are located on the left side of the receiver. See photos.

Overall, NRA Antique Fine Condition. 85% original blue on receiver with 60% blue mixed with patina on the barrel. Barrel has a few small tap marks next to barrel band. The wood is SOLID and has NO cracks around the breech and wrist areas which are very common on the Hotchkiss. It's in Fine Condition overall...never cleaned or had finish added...with great wood-to-metal fit. Action cycles properly. Bore is Excellent.
