This is a strong example of a standard 3rd Model Winchester 1873 rifle in 44-40 caliber, a.k.a. .44 W.C.F. It has a 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, crescent rifle buttplate w/ sliding trapdoor. Antique serial number is in the 444,000 range. Made in 1893. Original sights include semi-buckhorn rear sight and standard front w/ German silver blade.
Overall condition is NRA Antique Excellent condition. The receiver still has 85% original blue that has some light patina mixing in and some light scratching in places. Loading port has 65% fire blue. The brass loading block has turned to a pleasing untouched golden patina with a strong "44 CAL" marking. Hammer has 90% bright case colors with 40% discernable colors remaining on lever, balance washed out to silver. Barrel and magazine tube have 85% original blue. Nice markings and very good screws throughout. The wood is in Excellent condition, still a nice light reddish orange color retaining most of its original finish. Stock has 95% original varnish. Forearm has a few nicks and dings but still retains 80-85% original varnish. Perfect wood to metal fit throughout...never sanded or cleaned. Nice action that still feels good and tight...does not show much use. Very Good bore. Nice markings including two line barrel address with Henry's and King's patent dates. Barrel just ahead of chamber is marked "44 WCF" on top flat of the octagon. Upper tang is marked "Model 1873". Hammer has the correct original decorative Victorian dipped border pattern around the knurling which is present on the Model 1873 throughout the 1890's. An exceptional .44 caliber Winchester 1873 with desirable octagon barrel.
