This is a good example of an early Whitney Revolver in 36 Caliber w/7 1/2" octagonal barrel.  It's an early 2nd Model, 1st type with the spring loaded ball point loading lever catch and only one safety notch on the back of the cylinder (see photo).  There were about 1200 of this type made.  Low 3 digit serial number is in the 700 range with 100% matching numbers which include barrel, frame, cylinder, rammer, cylinder pin, triggerguard and both grips.  The top of the barrel is marked "E Whitney" <over> "N. HAVEN". 

Overall condition, NRA Antique VG with the metal worn to a silvery grey that's fairly smooth but a little frosted with light corrosion due to poor storage.  The edges and markings are all good.  Strong traces of original blue on the bottom 3 flats of the octagon barrel and around the front sight.  The brass triggerguard still has 75% original silver which has tarnished  to a light pewter color. The rolled cylinder scene is surprisingly good....Whitney scenes had a tendency to be very light in comparison to Colt cyl scenes and  usually wore away.  Except for some pitting from poor storage, it has about 75% of the scene remaining.  Walnut grips are in Excellent condition retaining 97% original varnish.  No chips, cracks, or repairs with perfect wood to metal fit.  Good screws.  The action works and indexes properly....hammer cocks just a hair early but works fine. A very decent bore with strong lands and grooves.  A nice example of a very early Whitney 2nd Model revolver with a 3 digit serial number.
