US Army 1874 Cavalry Tactics Manual |
This is an Indian Wars-era Cavalry Tactics Manual published for the United States Army in 1874. These were issued to US cavalry and mounted infantry officers throughout the US Army during the 1870's. Just to give you an idea of who would have been issued this manual, here is an example. Currently, we have an ID'd 1874 Manual that belonged to an officer in a mounted company of the 7th US Infantry who was in Montana at Camp Baker at the time of the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. While he was not at the battle, he did participate in the overall Yellowstone Campaign and was out in the field during the aftermath of Custer's defeat. The only survivor in Custer's command was an Indian scout from the 7th Infantry assigned to Custer's command. See link: These 1874 manuals are special in the sense that most cavalry regiments issued this publication were stationed in the American West AND that is was the current field manual at the time in which the Battle of Little Bighorn took place in 1876. While this one does not have a name written inside the cover, it does appear to have seen use out in the field. It's in Good+ Condition with no pages missing. The original brass clasp is intact and good working order. The Gold lettering on the cover shows some fading but is still completely legible. A nice addition to any American military collection.
