This is a nice clean example of the S&W 2nd Model Schofield revolver.  Standard 7" barrel with six shot cylinder in caliber .45 S&W.  Manufactured only 3 years from 1875-1877 with a total production of just under 9,000 units, the Schofield revolver saw quite a bit of use throughout the American frontier including heavy use with the 4th US Cavalry during the Geronimo campaign, the famed Buffalo soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavarly, as well as plenty of Civilian and outlaw use.  Frank and Jesse James as well as the Younger Brothers were reputed to have carried the Schofield as well as Marshall Bill Tilghman.  See Flayderman's 8th Ed. Page 205.   

Overall condition is NRA Antique Very Good Plus with a very smooth light grey brown patina with sharp edges, excellent markings, and no pitting.  There are traces of original blue around the screws with quite a bit of original blue remaining inside the frame and on the back of the cylinder when the action is opened up.  Nice mechanics and a very good bore that is still slightly bright with good lands and grooves and just a few minor pits. "US" stamped on bottomstrap with serial number.  This particular gun is in the 4100 serial range with all matching numbers except the right grip which is an original Schofield grip but numbered to a different gun.  The left grip still has a good legible cartouche  with US inspector's initials "CW".   Original sights.  A nice sharp example of a US military Schofield revolver.
