This is an early 1880's production S&W 2nd Model Double Action revolver in caliber .38 S&W. This one has a 3-1/4" barrel with nickel finish and checkered hard rubber grips. The Second model was produced from 1880-1884 (SN# 4,001-119,000) with the improved rounded side plates to increase frame strength. This one has a low serial number in the 7,000 range. It's so early that it has the same patent dates as the first model from running from 1865 to 1875. One distinguishing feature these early DA's have is the shorter cylinder flutes with the extra groove and dual stop notches. All matching numbers.
Overall condition is NRA Antique Excellent retaining 95% original nickel overall with some spots of freckling and small losses primarily from age rather than wear. Both the hammer and triggerguard still show most of their original case colors. Good screws and pins throughout. Trigger guard and barrel latch still show most of their original blue. Very good checkered hard rubber grips with good checkering and S&W monogram...and tiny patent date still visible on lower left grip. Excellent bore and mechanics. Barrel still locks up tightly to frame. A really nice example that has seen very little usage. However, please note this is a 130 year old weapon constructed of mild steel from the 19th century that was designed for black powder and cannot stand the pressures of modern ammunition. As are all of our items, it is being sold as an antique only and is not warranted as safe to fire.
