This is an interesting S&W .38 Double Action Revolver. These tend to be found with 3-1/4" and 4" barrels. This one has a 5" barrel which is the first one we've come across in quite some time. Serial number is in the 182,000 range. 3rd Model was produced from 1884-1895. Standard nickel finish with checkered hard rubber grips. Matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, latch, and barrel.
Overall Condition grades to NRA Antique Very Good. The metal has been lightly cleaned with traces of original nickel in protected area. Left side of barrel has some spots of light corrosion in the form of dark spots/stains which are not deep. Trigger guard and latch still show some original blue in protected area with good traces of case color remaining on the trigger and hammer. Excellent screws and pins throughout. Markings are excellent with patent dates on the barrel going up to 1882. The original grips on this gun were broken and badly chipped so we had an original pair fitted (not reproductions) and they look great. If desired, we can supply the originals which could be restored at some point in the future. The action is in excellent shape and works in both double and single action. Barrel latches tightly to the frame. Bore is quite nice. It has strong lands and grooves and remains bright with a few pits. I'd grade it Very Good Plus to Fine Overall. Decent example of a S&W Double Action with sharp lines, solid mechanics, nice bore, and a scarce barrel length that will display quite well.
