This is a very early 2nd Model S&W Double Action Topbreak Revolver. Caliber .38 S&W with 3-1/4" barrel, nickel finish, and checkered hard rubber grips. 2nd Model features include the early style cylinder with double stop notches and half-flutes, squared trigger guard, and a newly improved rounded sideplate which added strength to the frame. Serial number is in the 14,000 range and has 100% matching numbers. This includes the frame, cylinder, barrel, latch, and grips. Mf'd circa late 1880 or 1881. Barrel has May 11th and 25th 1880 patent dates.
Overall Condition is NRA Antique Fine with 65% Original nickel plating while balance has turned to a light gray to brown patina. Trigger guard shows 10% original blue while barrel latch retains 70% original blue. Trigger shows 25% case colors while the hammer has turned mostly dark. Checkered hard rubber grips are in Fine Condition with no chips or breaks There are a couple of tiny cracks in the hard rubber forming at the bottom of each grip around the guide post pinned into the frame. This is normal for 100+ year old S&W's but can be fixed quite easily which I will offer to do free of charge at buyer's request. The action is in good condition and works in both single and double action modes Latch is Perfect with zero play. Bore is Very Good Plus. These are really getting scarce as buyers have really been gobbling up these early topbreak pocket models at the major shows for the past several years. Nice example of a very early S&W Double Action that will soon be 135 years old!
