This is a 4th Model DA Smith and Wesson Top Break Revolver. Pre-1898 serial number is in the 339,000 range and falls under the 382,000 cut-off. See page 229, Flaydermans Guide to Antique American Firearms, 9th edition. Matching numbers throughout which includes the frame, cylinder, barrel, and latch. Standard nickel finish with 3-1/4" barrel, and checkered hard rubber grips. Top of barrel has the 1880, 1882, and 1889 patent dates along with the S&W logo on the right side of the frame.
Overall Condition grades to NRA Antique Fine with 60% original nickel overall. Trigger and hammer show 30% original case colors while the trigger guard and barrel latch retain 65% original blue. Very Good screws and pins overall. Checkered hard rubber grips have S&W logo with the checkering somewhat worn but quite discernable with no bare spots. Action is in good order with the mechanics still working in single action and full double action modes. Hammer holds at full cock (see photo). Rebounding ejector works as well (see photo). Good latch. Bore is Fair+ to Good- with discernable rifling but frosty. Good solid example of an early S&W DA Revolver. These early DA's with antique serial numbers have become increasingly difficult to locate as collectors have been buying them up.
