This is a very nice example of a large frame S&W Double Action revolver with blued finish. It's in caliber .44 Russian with a 5" barrel, and checkered hard rubber grips. Left side of barrel marked "44 S&W CTG" while the top rib has the S&W address w/ patent dates 1865 thru 1880 across the top rib. There is also a patent date on the lower left panel of the hard rubber grips marked "PAT JAN. 29 78". It's not often we see this patent still visible on a S&W, especially one that's completely legible as most wore away from even casual usage.
Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Excellent Plus with 95% strong original blue on the barrel and frame. Cylinder has 90% blue with a bit more patina mixed in with the blue...showing minimal loss from wear. The straps are the same way...they show hardly any use but some patina mixing through the blue...about 75% remaining. The majority of the screws and pins still retain their original blue save the grips screw which is correct to be nickel plated. Even the front sight retains all its original blue and contours having never been trimmed down. The case colors on the trigger and hammer are a strong 90% with the balance faded in high wear areas. The grips are perfect with no chips, cracks, or repairs and perfect fit to the metal straps and frame. The action works flawlessly in both single and double action modes. The latch is tight with no wobble between barrel and frame. The bore is flat MINT with perfect lands and grooves...mirror bright...and zero pitting. In terms of blued S&W DA's, with the fragile nature of blue, it's not often we find ones with this level of condition.
