This is an early 4th Model Smith and Wesson Double Action Revolver in .38 caliber. The 4th Model production began in 1895 around serial # 322,000; this one is in the 337,000 range...circa 1895-6. Note: those under 382,000 are pre-1898 antiques. 100% matching numbers which include the frame, inside of the grips, barrel latch, barrel, and cylinder. See photos. Standard Double Action Revolver, 3-1/4" barrel, checkered hard rubber gripsl, nickel finish with blued and case color hardened trim. Patent dates on the barrel run from 1880 to 1889. Note that in addition to the grips, the famous S&W trademark logo had been added to the right side of the frame; a practice which began at the end of the 19th century and is still placed on the frame of all new S&W's here in the 21st century. How many American companies are still in existence who've used the same logo on their products in three different centuries?
Overall, NRA Antique Fine+ Condition with 80-85% original nickel with balance of flaked areas turned to a dark brown patina. Hammer and trigger show strong traces of original case colors. Barrel and latch have 40% age darkened original blue with balance turning to patina. Checkered hard rubber grips are in Fine Condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Very Good bore. Nice mechanics. Good example of an early Smith and Wesson Double Action.
