This recently came to us from a family selling off their relative's estate. It's an early Smith and Wesson Frontier revolver in caliber .44 Winchester Center Fire, a.k.a. 44-40. It has a low 3-digit serial number in the 700 range with all matching numbers. Very possible this is a 1st year production Frontier DA. Made circa 1886. Standard 6" barrel with 1-9/16" cylinder, nickel plated finish with blued guard and case colored hammer and trigger. Grips are checkered hard rubber with the S&W logos at the tops of each panel.
Overall, it grades to NRA Antique VG+ to Fine with 50% original nickel with the balance flaked to a gray patina that's a little frosty in places. Hammer and trigger show 75% bright original case colors. 70% original blue on trigger guard. Good markings and screws throughout. Barrel still locks up tightly to the frame with no wobble or play. Hard rubber grips are in Fine Condition with good checkering with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Bore grades to near Excellent...bright and shiny with sharp lands and grooves with a few light pits. All in all, a nice solid S&W Frontier with a low SN# at a reasonable price.
