This Second Model Single Action Smith and Wesson Revolver is in .38 caliber with a 4" barrel. Standard S&W checkered hard rubber grips. It's basically a continuation of the S&W Baby Russian Model with an improved ejector mechanism, hence the lack of the lug or longer housing beneath the barrel. The 2nd Model was manufactured from 1878-1891 with a production that totaled 108,000 units. This example is in the 87,000 range which would probably date its manufacture towards the tail end of the 1880's. The numbers are 100% ALL MATCHING which includes the frame, barrel latch, barrel, cylinder, and even the hard rubber grips.
Overall condition grades well into NRA Antique Excellent with 98-99% original nickel plated finish on the barrel and frame. The cylinder grades to 90% nickel with a little bit of flaking between the cylinder stops and edges trailing of the front edges of the chambers. Hammer shows 80% strong case colors. Barrel latch shows 95% orig. blue. Hard rubber grips are Excellent --sharp checkering, perfect fit to the frame, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The mechanics are in Excellent shape. Barrel still latches up tightly to the frame with zero play or wobble. The ejectors still work flawlessly. Bore is Excellent. All in all, this is a superior example of the Model 2 Single Action Pocket Revolver.
