This is a fantastic little Remington New Police Pocket Revolver in .36 caliber. This is a nice clean untouched example with light original factory engraving with most of its original nickel finish accented by fire-blued screws and a case colored hammer. Its a beauty! Standard 3 1/2" octagonal barrel with 5 shot cylinder. Barrel is marked "PATENTED SEPT 14 1858 MARCH 17 1865 E REMINGTON & SONS ILION NEW YORK USA NEW MODEL". Basically, these were scaled down from the Navy Model to compete against the Colt Model 1862 Police. Produced from 1865-73, many of these were sold during the 1870's with cylinders in .38 rimfire as is the case here. Many of these were sold as sets with both percussion and cartridge cylinders...hence the reason for retaining the original loading lever. The cylinders were interchangeable but over the years, many have become lost.
Overall condition is NRA Antique Excellent with 95% original nickel finish on the barrel, frame, straps, and trigger guard. Cylinder 80% original nickel with the balance turned to light patina. Screws and trigger retain much of their original fire blued finish which accentuates the nickel and factory engraving very nicely. Hammer still shows about 90% strong original case colors. Action works perfectly. Bore has strong rifling...very good overall. Nice solid walnut grips retaining 15% original piano varnish with excellent wood to metal fit. No cracks or repairs...one minute chip at the back corner of left grip. Fantastic example of factory engraved New Model Police when Remington hit their zenith during the 1860's and 70's.
