Remington Model 1882 Double Barrel Shotgun --Scarce Variation w/ Special Order Barrels--

This is a fairly scarce little Remington Double Barrel shotgun w/ rabbit ear hammers in 12 gauge known as the Model 1882.  Built from 1882-1889, Remington only manufactured approximately 5,000 units.  The damascus barrels are factory 26" which is a scarce length for any Model Remington double gun; 28" and 30" were standard for this model.  The gun balances well and the shorter barrels would have made it a versatile gun back in its day... from light hunting, especially in brush, to home defense or even guard/law enforcement use.  Top rib is simply marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS . ILION N.Y." in tiny fonts which made it rather challenging for us to photograph.  Locks are unmarked which is correct for the 1882.  Inside the action under the barrels are two patent dates: 1871 and 1872.  Serial number is in the 12,000 range with matching numbers.

Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Very Good+ that looks nice and has remained untouched for many years.  Frame has strong case colors in protected areas with the more exposed areas faded to a coin silver and beginning to turn over to a patina in places.  Nice markings.  Excellent screw heads. Inside of the action and the takedown framework under the forearms have super case colors.  Damascus barrels are turning to a light patina but still show most of their twist pattern.  These were originally blued and if you look closely at the photos, you'll see some still remaining in protected areas; mostly along and beside the barrel ribs.  The wood is completely untouched with 80% original varnish with a thin layer of haze that's built up over many years.   Checkering on the stock and forearm are in very good condition. Tip of forearm still retains its original ebony insert.  Excellent wood-to-metal fit with no cracks or repairs.  Both hammers work properly and the barrels lock tightly to the action with no wiggle or play.  Bores are still fairly bright but a little frosty with some very light corrosion.  All in all, a nice Remington Double barrel in a fairly scarce model and barrel configuration.  Typically, we'll see several dozen Model 1889's and hammerless 1894's before we encounter an earlier model such as this Model 1882.
