Remington Model 1875 Single Action Revolver

This is an early production Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver from the first run which were all in caliber. 44 Remington Centerfire. These pre-dated the 44-40 which came along later in production. Meant to be a competitor of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver, the Remington Model 1875 or "Improved Army" as it was sometimes known, was produced from 1875-1889 for a total of approximately 25,000 units. In spite of its short production due to Remington going bankrupt in the late 1880's, the Model 1875 managed to make a name for itself all over the world in just a few short years. When outlaw Frank James surrendered to authorities in the early 1880's, the sidearm he turned in was a nickel 1875 Remington. 650 Model 1875s were purchased by the US gov't and issued to the Indian Reservation Police as well as sizable purchases by the government of Mexico, and the Egyptian military. Some even made it back to Great Britain as war trophies following its war with Egypt in 1882. The serial number of this one is in the 11,000 range. It has the early desirable style pinched front sight and lanyard ring on the bottom of the grip which were eliminated on late production variants. The quality on earlier 1875's tends to also be higher than later production when Remington got into financial trouble. The finish was originally blued as there are some traces remaining in protected areas of the barrel, web under the barrel, and trigger guard. Overall, it has a nice smooth grey that has mostly turned over to a light brown patina. The barrel has the Remington & Sons address that is good and legible. Good screws throughout. Cylinder pin is good condition with the spring catch intact. Action is in good order. Typical 1870's era black powder. Bore is Good overall with decent rifling with some scattered pits. No rings or bulges. Grips are original and still retain what looks to be some of their original varnish. A few tally marks on both grip panels. Good solid example of an early Model 1875 Remington.
