This is a standard late production single action Merwin & Hulbert with 7" barrel, conventional cylinder flutes, birdshead grips, marked "CALIBRE WINCHESTER 1873" aka 44-40. The left side of the barrel has the tiny "HOPKINS & ALLEN" markings, the firm who built these revolvers for the Merwin & Hulbert Company. The top of the barrel has the Merwin & Hulbert address with patent dates running from JAN 24...1874...THROUGH MAR 6, 77. Markings are a little worn on the barrel but 100% legible and not dished out...just show honest wear. Original nickel finish has flaked and worn to approximately 25% with the balance being a mixture of light grey patina and some small patches of light pitting due. The front sight has a very thin brass blade inserted to the extreme top which doesn't distract. The right hard rubber grip has a chip where half of the round upper panel has been chipped out...otherwise, grips are solid with decent checkering. Action works and the the suction on the barrel assembly during the unloading process is quite remarkable...standing upright...it almost floats down to the recoil shield...always nice to see on an old Merwin like this. Good bore with a good rifling and a few scattered pits. Good screws and nice hammer checkering. A decent example of the Single Action Merwin which was very popular out West and throughout Mexico during the latter part of the 19th century.
