Maynard 2nd Model Carbine --NICE--

This is a late Civil War Second Model Maynard breech loading percussion carbine. 50 caliber with 20" part round barrel, saddle ring, and two leaf sight. These fired a brass cartridge with a small pin-hole in the base which was ignited by a standard percussion cap. While many of the early 1st Model Maynards were purchased by the South just prior to the Civil War, 2nd Model Maynards were used by Union cavalry regiments including several in the western theater. This particular example is dated 1865 and in the 25,000 serial range with matching numbers on the frame, lower tang, and sideplate. Being late war, it appears to have seen very limited use and remains in NRA Antique Fine Plus Condition. The frame still shows 40% original case colors which range from bright vivid hues around the saddle ring to subtle fades colors on the right side of the frame. The barrel has 80% original blue that is mixing with patina. The stock has nearly all of its oil finish with just minor handling marks and two great US inspector cartouches. Original front and rear sights. The bore is Fine Plus, bright and shiny three groove rifling with a little bit of frosting. Just a very nice example of a Civil War Maynard with lots of original finish that's priced to move!
