Rare .44 Marlin Model 1894 Takedown Rifle

Here is a Marlin you won't see very often!  This is an early Model 1894 Rifle in desirable 44-40 Caliber with the scarce takedown frame.  Best of all, it has an early antique serial number in the 115,000 range.  According to the Brophy book, the first 1894 ever built was in the 107,000 range so this is probably a rather early 1894 or 1895 production gun.  Furthermore, LL Hepburn's takedown design was Patented in May 1894 with the earliest takedown 1894 produced also being in the 107,000 range.

Overall condition is NRA Antique Fine+ with Lyman tang and folding globe combination front sight.  The case colors on the frame still have 35% good case colors, 35% light smoky mottled colors, with the remaining 30% mostly silvered out or turning to a light patina.  Hammer retains 60% case colors with 25% mostly faded colors remaining on the lever.  The loading port still shows 95% blue while even the screws show most of their original bright blue.  The barrel, magazine tube, and forend cap retain 90% original blue with excellent edges and markings.  Barrel is marked with the Marlin Address followed by the 1887, 1889, and 1893 Patent dates.   Top of the receiver is marked "Marlin Safety" in script.  The sights consist of a correct Lyman tang sight and Lyman folding combination front sight.  The rear sight slot has pretty fire-blued filler seated in the dovetail.  The wood is in Excellent overall condition showing only light handling marks...still light orangish red in color with 95% strong original varnish remaining.  No chips, cracks, or repairs.  Crescent buttplate is mostly silvered out but still shows light mottled case colors.  Action works nicely.  Bore is in Fine+ condition...very bright and shiny with strong lands...and just a few light pits...no rings, or bulges.  Takedown works well and still locks up good and tight. This is a fantastic rifle with a very difficult combination of features to find in an antique serial range.
