This is a rare straight grip deluxe stock from an early Winchester Model 1912 Deluxe Black Diamond Shotgun. Burl walnut looks to be about Grade XX. The back of the stock is stamped "TRAP". The Black Diamond Deluxe shotguns are usually associated with the Model 1897 but some of the early Model 1912's were also made up as black diamonds. While the Model 12 enjoyed a very long production run, being a black diamond, my guess is that it dates to pre-World War One. Found this one on a table at a show years ago and while I've never owned a Model 12, it was hard to pass up such a pretty piece of lumber. It still has its original checkered hard rubber buttplate with the Winchester logo that has somehow survived intact. The stock is in NRA Antique Very Good Condition with 40-50% Original varnish . There are numerous light handling markings but most are superficial with no deep gouges or scratches due to the density of the burl. The checkering is in good condition...all there but a little worn in spots. Ebony black diamond inlays are intact in the V's of the checkering pattern on each side. The burl on the stock has some nice crotchwood starting at the top of the comb and bursting into rays diagonally towards the toe of the stock. Like most Winchester deluxe stocks, they were very careful to select wood where the grain straightened up at the wrist. Hope someone can use this stock as there are a number of possibilities for its use. Ideally, it could help a Model 12 Black Diamond that's in need of a solid stock but it could also be used as a spare or the one you change out to shoot with. Personally, I like the look of the original patina and wear but it would refinish nicely on a restoration.
