This is a nice example of a Confederate Copy of the Sharps Carbine manufactured by SC Robinson of Richmond, VA in 1862. This particular gun recently surfaced from a very old collection that has pieces dating back as far as the 1920's and 30's. The serial number is in the 1600 range and is all matching having been found on all major parts. It's generally believed that a total of 3500 of these Confederate sharps were produced by SC Robinson from Dec. 1862 to March 1863 and subsequentally by the Confederate Goverment until early 1864. For a gun in the 1600 range, this would be a fairly late example for the SC Robinson as Murphy's book on Confederate Carbines states the Confederate Gov't took over production around the 1900 serial range. The lockplate is marked: - C.S. ROBINSON.
