A nice example of a Colt Side-hammer Root pocket revolver. This one is a Model Number 5 with 3 1/2" round barrel, full fluted cylinder, and the larger .31 Caliber...earlier Roots were .28 Caliber like the Colt No. 1 Pocket Paterson Revolvers. Serial number is in the 7000 range and was manufactured at the height of the Civil War in 1863. Overall condition is NRA Antique Fine+ still retaining much of its original blue and case colors. Excellent markings and knurlings and throughout. Grips are nearly flawless retaining 98%+ original varnish. Nice mechanics. A great Root well worthy of a Colt wooden case!
