Over the years, we've been fortunate to find a handful of Colt Model New Pocket Revolvers with serial numbers low enough to qualify them as pre-1898 antiques. The New Pocket was produced from 1893 to 1905 and was the forerunner to the more well-known Colt Pocket Positive Revolver. Every example I've ever seen has been chambered in .32 Colt but I have read in Flayderman's Guide that there may have been a few of these built for .32 Smith and Wesson. Well, here is an actual Colt New Pocket chambered in .32 S&W. It's the only one I've ever seen. The left side of the barrel is stamped "FOR 32 S&W CTG." Never thought we'd see a Colt marked with the name of its archrival's name on the barrel (See photos). This one is nickel plated with fire blued appointments and a fantastic set of original pearl grips. The barrel is original to the gun with correct 1884 and 1888 patent dates. Serial number is in the 9,200 range which dates its manufacture to the year 1897. Note, only COLT NEW POCKETS with serial numbers under 11,900 were produced prior to Jan. 1, 1899 and are legally antique. Left sideplate is stamped with the Colt Rampant Horse Logo surrounded by the model name "COLT'S NEW POCKET".
Overall condition grades to the lower end of NRA Antique Excellent with 80% original nickel plating intact. Hammer and trigger show strong traces of original fire blue. Genuine mother of pearl grips are excellent with perfect fit to the gripstraps and zero chips, cracks, or repairs. Action works properly in single and double action modes. Good bore. Nice looking Colt in a very rare caliber.
