This is a rare example of a Colt Lightning musket. Only about 250 of these were manufactured for the Costa Rican military in the late 19th century. Caliber is 44-40. Military features include a 27" round barrel with large steel lug on right side for mounting a saber bayonet. Magazine tube is slightly shorter than barrel for the bayonet. Military sights feature a reverse ladder rear sight and post front...identical to what we see on standard carbines. Stock and forearm feature semi-crescent buttplate and two panel checkered forend. Original military sling swivels are intact with the front mounted to the magazine tube and the rear one mounted toward the rear of the stock. Good markings throughout with nice Colt barrel address. Caliber marking on left side of barrel "44 Cal." shows a bit of wear but still good and legible. Serial number is in the 51,000 range. Overall Condition grades to NRA Antique Good with the metal mostly worn to a gray brown patina. Stocks are in Good Condition Overall. Forend is solid with no cracks, good checkering with some wear and handling marks. Stock shows solid with no cracks but numerous handling marks...typical of military use with a small flaw in the left corner next to the upper tang. Tangs are solid with no repairs. Original dust cover is intact. Bore is Fine...still semi-bright with strong rifling. A solid example of a rare Colt repeating musket!
