This is a superb example of a Model 1862 Police Revolver in .36 Caliber. 100% matching numbers in the 39,000 range date production to the year 1868. 4 1/2" round barrel with 5 shot half-fluted cylinder. Its hard to put into words just how nice this Colt truly is...hopefully the pictures will convey this better. Its one thing to find a Colt with 75%, 85%, or even 95% overall original finish...but these numbers only apply to a percentile of coverage and never explain the depth and brightness of those colors. Even guns with this much color are naturally faded over 100+ years from wear and just sunlight still look a bit flat. In contrast, I've never seen one this vivid...the case colors and deep dark polished blue are just stunning. This 1862 gives us a rare glimpse at what a Colt really and truly looked like back in 1868.
Overall condition is NRA Antique Excellent Plus condition with 97% vivid original case colors on the frame with a few minor spots from storage while the hammer and loading lever both exhibit 95% bright case colors. The barrel has 92%+ heavy bright original blue showing very little wear..a couple scratches on right side...and only minor flaking on the left side forward of the wedge. Cylinder retains 97% strong bright blue. In fact, there is still original blue in chambers and the barrel. This gun appears to have been fired very little. Overall, the screws still have 95% bright fire blue remaining. Brass triggerguard and backstrap have traces of original silver plating remaining....this is perfectly normal for a late production Colt percussion revolver....the silver plating was extremely thin and even near mint examples of Model 1849's, 1860's, and 1862's like this one show very little silver plating. In contrast, an early production Colt made in the 1850's typically can have no original blue left but still retain much of their original silver plating. Still, these early guns never really had the firey case colors like these later ones. The walnut grips are in excellent condition showing only minor handling marks with 98% original varnish intact. Perfect wood to metal fit with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Excellent mechanics and a near perfect bore. Sorry, but the price on this one is firm but nonetheless, this is a Magnificent Colt you will always be proud to own!
