Colt Model 1849 Revolver w/ 6" Barrel

This is a sharp little Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver in .31 caliber. During the 19th century, no other Colt Model saw higher production than the Model 1849 with just over 350,000 m'fd in both Colt's Hartford and London factories. During the Civil War, it was purchased by thousands of soldiers in both the Union and Confederate armies for use as personal carry/back-up weapons. Features include standard five-shot cylinder with a desirable 6" barrel. Serial number is in the 132,000 range which dates its production to the year 1857. It has 100% ALL MATCHING serial numbers which includes the barrel, frame, grip straps, cylinder arbor, cylinder, wedge, loading lever, and the grips which were hand numbered in black ink under the backstrap by the Colt Workman 157 years ago. See photos.

Overall Condition grades to NRA Antique Very Good. Trigger guard retains 10% original silver plating while the backstrap shows 65% thinning silver. There is still 40% of what remains of the original case colors on the frame which have mostly silvered out.The metal has sharp edges and good markings throughout and was probably carefully cleaned too bright many years ago, perhaps for display in an older collection which was common practice. The roll-engraved scene of the stagecoach holdup on the cylinder is a strong 80% but with a couple of spots of light pitting from poor storage. Scene-wise, these spots are mostly around the coach... between the wagon wheels and one of the horses. Back of the cylinder retains all five of its original safety pins on the lugs. Screws are in VG+ to Exc. condition. Several retain much of their original fire blue. Trigger also shows strong traces of original blue. Grips are Excellent and retains 90% original varnish with perfect fit to the straps and frame. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Excellent mechanics...indexes properly, bolt locks in place, and you can hear all four clicks when the hammer is pulled back. Half cock notch is fine. The bore is EXCELLENT....bright and shiny with near perfect lands and grooves. For its age, it's remarkable to find a black powder era revolver with such a nice bore as someone must have taken good care of it. All in all, a nice example of a 6" Model 49' Colt.
