This is an exceptionally nice example of the Burnside Carbine in .54 Caliber which was issued to more than 50 Union Cavalry Regiments during the Civil War. This particular example is a 5th model and appears to be in unfired condition and shows virtually no wear due to usage. The top of the frame is marked "Burnside's Patent (over) Model of 1864". All matching numbers. Complete with saddle bar/ring, swivel, and sights. The left side of the stock has two crisp military inspector cartouches as well as small sub-inspector stamps on many of the parts.
Overall, this carbine was stored for many years as there is a fair bit of dried grease and closet freckles. It is 100% untouched and 100% original. The condition is NRA Antique Excellent+ with 85-90% strong original case colors on the frame and lockplate mixing with a few light brown freckles and dried grease in the corners. Barrel has 95% original blue with balance lightly freckled from 140+ years of storage. Breech block and upper tang retain 99% bright shiny original fire blue. Screws also retain all of their original vivid fire blue. Even the buttplate still has nearly all of its original vivid case colors remaining. Action shows little to no wear retaining all of its bright original finish...even the chamber in the breech block has all of its original blue intact. Bore is mint...bright and shiny like a mirror. Wood shows only minor handling marks and has never been refinished or cleaned and has aged to a very nice dark reddish brown patina. No chips, cracks, or repairs. A superior example of the Burnside carbine priced below the market....this is a lot of gun for the money to still be unfired as ones a hair better typically bring 5K and up.
