This is a 3rd Model Double Action Revolver in Caliber 38 S&W with 3 1/4" barrel. Built from 1884-1895 (SN#'s 119,000-322,00). All are Pre-1898 antiques. This one in the middle of production in the 274,000 range. All matching numbers throughout. Barrel patent dates run up to 1882. Finish is blued with correct case colored hammer/trigger and nickel front sight blade and ejector. We look high and low for these blued ones but they don't turn up with nearly the frequency of ones with nickel plated finish nor (when we do) in very good condition.
Overall condition is NRA Antique 80% original blue intact with most of the losses confined to the grip handle, top rib, and some spots on the left side plate. Smith and Wesson barrels have a tendency to flake...especially blued guns (perhaps to heat expansion from firing), but this one is much better than average retaining 85-90%. Frame has a few nicks and tiny dings around the guard pins...otherwise nice. Trigger and hammer still exhibit discernable original case colors while the front sight has 25% original nickel and ejector retains nearly 100% of its finish. Excellent checkered hard rubber grips with S&W logo. Fit perfectly with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Barrel locks up tightly to the action. No wiggle or play. Both Double and Single action modes work fine with proper indexing. Bore is near mint. A very respectable example of an early blued S&W Pocket DA.
