Winchester Bullet Mold in Scarce Caliber 38-72

This is a standard Winchester 1892 Standard Sporting Rifle that is straight out of a family and has never been in a collection. Caliber .38 WCF a.k.a. 38-40. 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, crescent rifle buttplate. Standard original semi-buckhorn rear sight and Lyman Hunting front sight which was both a special order and mail order option. It also has Winchester sling eyes. Like the sights, sling eyes could be special ordered and added by the factory but most were installed by dealers or mail ordered through the Winchester catalog. That said, although we have not lettered this rifle, these appear to be one of the latter two...dealer or mail order. Early markings include two-line barrel address on top flat of octagon. Upper tang has correct early three lines indicating make, model, and John Browning original 1884 patent date.

Overall Condition grades to NRA Antique Fine. Receiver has approximately 70% original blue that is mixing with patina. Note the little parallel brown streaks on both sides...these are forging striations which are common on early Winchesters. The loading port shows a fair bit of original fire blue. Bolt has 75% original blue. Top of lever shows hints of original case colors as does the hammer. Barrel and magazine show 75% dull original blue with a patch of brown patina and some dark stains...as though the original owner placed a sweaty palm hand around the barrel. See photos. Strong markings throughout. Screws are in Fine to Excellent Condition throughout. Original walnut stocks are fine overall...better than the pictures with most of the original varnish intact. Nice wood to metal fit. Action is smooth. Hammer works on full and half cock positions. Bore is bright and grades to Excellent. Nice example of an early Winchester Model 1892 rifle.
