Standard early production Winchester 1894 sporting rifle in 30 WCF. 26" round barrel, full magazine, and crescent buttplate. Original sights include platinum-lined 2 leaf Express sight and standard front sight with German silver blade. Antique serial number. Made in 1898. Has the early Winchester barrel address with Model designation and Aug. 21, 1894 Patent date located on the upper tang. Hammer has the early type dipped border around the top of the checkering.
Overall condition is NRA Very Good. It has a lot of original blue remaining but was improperly stored. Overall, it could stand and would improve considerably with a good careful cleaning. The frame has about 50% original blue left that's mixed with a heavy patina and some light closet rut. You can still see some nice case colors on the lever that are hazing over to patina. Barrel and magazine tube are about like the frame with about 65% discernable blue that is darkened with age....and mixed with patina. The wood is really nice, still reddish orange in color with about 80% original varnish remaining. No chips, cracks, or repairs and the wood to metal fit is perfect. Action works fine. At this point, the bore is filthy but the good news is that it doesn't show a lot of use and I think it will clean up to nearly Excellent. The chamfered edge at the muzzle is still sharp and the rifling looks strong right out to the edge. Usually, these chamfers get rounded over through repeated firing....this one is still sharp. No rings or bulges either. A nice Model 1894 rifle with potential!
