This is an early production Model 1892 SRC in Caliber 44-40. Standard carbine with 20" round barrel, full magazine, crescent carbine style buttplate, saddle ring, and ladder style rear sight. Low serial number is in the 45,000 range and according to the Madis book dates its production to 1894. We don't see many Pre-1898 antique 92 and 94 carbines as they tend to dominate late production. This one has all the early features you expect to find with the 2 line Winchester barrel address located on the top between the rear band and sight. The caliber is marked atop the barrel between the frame and sight that reads "44 W.C.F." John Browning's Oct. 14, 1884 patent date is located on the upper tang along with the Winchester name and Model designation. Original rear sight with 2-900 yard designtions and front sight with the early style German silver blade. True to many earliest 1892's, this carbine has the decorative dipped border to the checkering pattern.
Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Fine with 75% worn original receiver blue intact that shows a nice shadow from the saddle ring. Traces of original case colors on the hammer and lever.65-70% fire blue still remains on the loading port. Barrel and magazine show 60% fading original blue. Very Good screws overall. Markings are perfect. Original early type walnut wood (not gumwood) is in fine+ condition showing much of its original oil finish. Shows very little handling wear with the exception of a couple of small thin flecks of wood that are missing against the edge of the lower tang, the wood has no chips, cracks, or repairs. Nice mechanics and a very good bore with strong rifling. A good solid example of a scarce early Model 1892 carbine.
