This is a another nice little 1892 sporting rifle that's early production with an antique serial number in the 53,000 range (1894 production). Caliber 38-40 with standard 24" octagon, full magazine, and crescent rifle buttplate. Caliber is marked 38 WCF on the top flat of the octagon in front of the receiver. Early style 2 line Winchester barrel address on the top flat of the octagon. There are a couple of interesting markings on this rifle that reveal it went back to the factory around the turn of the 20th century as the barrel and frame bear Winchester proofs. Winchester didn't place proofmarks on their barrels until the early 1900's so we know it was sometime after roughly 1902. My guess is perhaps it had a broken firing pin or torn cartridge case that couldn't be extracted so it was returned, replaced/removed, and then re-proved before being shipped back to its owner.
Overall condition is NRA Antique Excellent with 80% original toning receiver blue with wear along the edges and belly of the frame. 40% fire blue on the loading port. Both hammer and lever show strong hints of mottled colors. Barrel and magazine tube show 80% original blue that is dulling. Excellent screws throughout. Original sights include the standard semi-buckhorn rear sight and German silver blade front sight. Fine wood overall that is completely untouched showing about 60% original varnish. Perfect wood to metal fit with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Nice action and a nearly perfect bore that is Excellent+. A nice solid example of an early Model 1892 rifle with lots of condition and a great look.
