Winchester 1873 w/ Fancy Wood

This Model 1873 sporting rifle was special ordered from Winchester with a single set trigger.  It's fairly early for a 3rd Model, 167,000 SN# range, (circa 1884) in Cal. 38-40 with a standard 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, and crescent rifle buttplate.  The wood looks to be close to 1X Grade walnut with some nice burl and layered patterns on the stock.   Winchester was known to use some of their better grained walnut stocks on their rifles when ordered with special features.

Overall condition is NRA Antique Very Good+. This rifle has a great look to it. Nice smooth metal that has worn to a light silvery grey patina with small amounts of original blue in the protected areas.  Nice edges and sharp markings throughout. No dings, pits, or any signs of abuse to the metal.  Even the "38 CAL" marking on the brass loading block is still crisp. Excellent screws overall which really give this gun a very clean look to it.  Original sights include the early solid style standard semi-buckhorn rear sight and German silver blade front sight.  The wood is just great...that's all I can say...sure its got a few minor nicks and scratches which is normal for being 123 years old...but it has great profiles with perfect wood to metal fit. No chips, cracks, or repairs. The set trigger still functions perfectly just like it should and can be adjusted to various pull weights.  The action works nicely with the firing pin still indexing and the lever still snaps when you close the action.  The bore is in Fine Condition, a few pits but still bright with strong rifling.  You can tell whoever owned this rifle took excellent care of it.
