This is the last model of US military Percussion Musket produced by the National Armory in Springfield, Mass during the Civil War. Known as the Model 1863 Type II, it was produced from 1864-65 with a total production just over 250,000 units.  This one was built in 1864 and is a good solid example of the Model 63 in .58 Caliber with 40" barrel. True to the Type II, it has 3 barrel bands secured by band springs. 

Overall, this rifle is in Very Good Condition with good edges and markings. The metal has been lightly cleaned in the past bringing it back close to what it looked like when it was new.  The metal overall is quite good with only minor surface blemishing.  It displays quite well and from more than a couple feet away, you would assume it to be a near mint example. The lock is clearly marked  SPRINGFIELD" with the Eagle motif....the smaller Eagle located on the side of the barrel bolster is only partially visible. The back of the lock is dated "1864" behind the hammer as well as a clear "1864" date on top of the barrel.  This is quite good considering barrel dates were often obliterated from corrosive primer residue spattering around the the bolster and breech areas....fortunately this one has survived.  The side of the barrel bears the "V"/"P", the Springfield Eagle symbol and inspectors initials LFR.  The top of the barrel also has the letters "I.C."  Buttplate is also clearly marked "US" on the top toe. The ramrod has the tulip shaped head with straight shaft.  The wood is in VG plus condition  stock cartouches are a bit faint but still visible with the "ESA" cartouche still legible.  No cracks, chips, or repairs to the wood.  Good tight wood to metal fit overall.  Good mechanics and a good bore with the original rifling intact....which should clean to VG or better.  Overall, just a nice solid 1863 for a fair price!
